Beef Tallow for Skin: What It Can and Cannot Do, and the Balm We Stock
If you have picked up a little jar of whipped tallow balm and wondered whether it actually works or is just a trend, it is a fair question. Beef tallow skincare is all over social media right now, and a lot of what you read is either a miracle story or a warning. I'm Brian Bowen. Jenn and I raise 100% grass-fed and grass-finished cattle on our pasture fifteen minutes north of Roanoke, and we stock a tallow balm made by Hearth and Homestead. Here is what we have learned, what the research says, and where we think tallow fits.
The problem: dry skin and a lot of noise
If your hands crack every winter, if your lips split, or if you are tired of lotions with ingredient lists you cannot pronounce, tallow sounds like the answer. The trouble is that the claims around it have run far ahead of the evidence. You will see posts saying tallow cures eczema, erases wrinkles, works as sunscreen and is packed with vitamins. Some of that is wrong, and acting on it can cost you money or leave your skin worse off.
What beef tallow is
Tallow is rendered beef fat. You heat raw fat (often the firm fat around the kidneys, called suet) until the liquid fat separates, then strain it. What is left is a shelf-stable fat that is solid at room temperature. USDA's nutrient database lists rendered beef tallow at roughly half saturated fat, about 42% monounsaturated fat and about 4% polyunsaturated fat by weight. [USDA FoodData Central, FDC ID 171400]
That fat profile is the reason it feels rich and stays on the skin. It is also why it behaves more like a balm or ointment than a lotion.
What tallow can do for skin
It moisturizes. Dr. Farah Moustafa, a Tufts dermatologist, put it plainly: tallow "will absolutely moisturize skin." It contains fatty acids such as oleic and linoleic acid that show up in many ordinary moisturizers. [Tufts University School of Medicine]
It works as a barrier on dry spots. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends thick creams or ointments, applied right after bathing while skin is still damp, for dry skin. [American Academy of Dermatology, dry skin tips] A dense fat balm fits that description, and that is the honest reason many people like it on knuckles, heels, elbows and lips.
It is generally tolerated. A 2024 scoping review of tallow in skin care found it is generally acceptable for human skin, while noting how thin the clinical research is. [PubMed Central PMC11193910]
What tallow cannot do (or has not been shown to do)
- It is not a proven wrinkle treatment. Tufts dermatology notes there is no evidence tallow works the way retinol does on fine lines. [Tufts University School of Medicine]
- It is not a good bet for acne-prone skin. The same Tufts dermatologist calls tallow highly comedogenic, meaning it can clog pores. If you break out easily, keep it off your face.
- It is not sunscreen. Sun protection comes from tested active ingredients on a Drug Facts label. [U.S. FDA, Sunscreen]
- It is not a proven eczema treatment. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia reviewed the evidence in February 2026 and concluded the science is not strong enough to call tallow an eczema treatment, and that some fatty acids may even increase water loss in eczema-prone skin. [Children's Hospital of Philadelphia]
- Be careful with vitamin claims. You will see "rich in vitamins A, D, E and K" on a lot of tallow labels. USDA's database lists no measurable vitamin A in rendered beef tallow. [USDA FoodData Central, FDC ID 171400] We would rather tell you that than repeat a claim we cannot back up.
There is one more thing worth knowing. Tallow skincare is sold as a cosmetic, and FDA does not approve cosmetics before they go on sale. A product that claims to treat or prevent a disease is legally a drug, not a cosmetic. [U.S. FDA, Is It a Cosmetic, a Drug, or Both?] When a tallow jar promises to heal a skin condition, that is a red flag about the seller, not proof about the product.
The balm we stock, and why
We do not make tallow skincare ourselves. The jar on our shelf is the Hearth & Homestead Whipped Tallow Balm, made by Hearth and Homestead, not by us, and it is $12. [Pure Grass Farm, Whipped Tallow Balm product page] If it is sold out when you stop in, call (540) 240-9955 and we will tell you when more is coming.
We like it for the same reasons our customers do: it is whipped, so it spreads easily instead of sitting on the skin like a candle, and a small amount goes a long way on rough hands. The cedar scent comes from added scent, which brings us to the one caution we give everyone: if your skin reacts to fragrance or essential oils, patch test first. Tufts notes that makers often add essential oils to mask tallow's natural smell, and many people are sensitive to those oils. [Tufts University School of Medicine]
Our simple plan for trying tallow
- Patch test. Put a small amount on the inside of your forearm for two or three days. No redness or itching? Move on.
- Start where skin is driest. Hands, heels, elbows, cuticles and lips are where a dense balm earns its keep.
- Apply to damp skin. Right after washing or a shower, a thin layer seals in water. That is standard dermatology advice for dry skin. [American Academy of Dermatology]
- Keep it off acne-prone areas. If you break out, use it below the neck.
- See a doctor for a skin condition. Eczema, psoriasis or any rash that will not quit deserves a real diagnosis.
What is at stake if you get this wrong
The cost of a $12 jar is small. The real cost is skipping treatment that works because a video promised tallow would fix it, or putting a pore-clogging fat on skin that breaks out. Used for what it is good at, tallow is a simple, satisfying balm. Used as a cure-all, it disappoints.
What success looks like
Hands that stop cracking in January. Lips that make it through a windy week on the farm. A short ingredient list you understand, bought from a store where you can ask questions in person. That is the honest promise.

Frequently asked questions
Does beef tallow clog pores? It can. A Tufts dermatologist describes tallow as highly comedogenic, which means it is more likely than many moisturizers to clog pores. If you are acne-prone, use it on hands, feet and body rather than your face.
Is beef tallow good for your face? For dry, non-acne-prone skin, many people like it as a night balm. For oily or breakout-prone skin it is a poor choice. Patch test first and stop if you see new bumps or irritation.
Does tallow have vitamins A, D, E and K? USDA lists no measurable vitamin A in rendered beef tallow, so we do not repeat that claim. Treat tallow as a fat-based moisturizer, not a vitamin product.
How long does it take to see results? For dry, rough skin most people notice a difference in softness within a few applications, because the balm seals moisture in right away. Claims about wrinkles or scars over weeks are not supported by research.
Do you make your own tallow balm? No. We stock balm made by Hearth and Homestead. We sell our own beef fat for people who want to render tallow at home when it is in stock.
